It is interesting to me how much we’ve normalized God’s prompting on a day to day basis, yet turn around to say
“Where was God?”
“For God may speak in one way, or in another,
Yet man does not perceive it.” (Job 33:14)
The thing is, we’ve become so accustomed to believing that we’re natural beings trying to have a spiritual experience when really, we’re spiritual beings who are supposed to be having a natural experience.
“So he called ten of his servants … and said to them,
‘Do business till I come..” (Luke 19:13)
In my short time here on this Earth, I’ve learned that God is always speaking and always nudging us – giving us heads up along the way.
> That sudden feeling that you shouldn’t drive your normal route from work… don’t ignore it
> That unsettling gut feeling that tells you that maybe, just maybe, you shouldn’t go on the road today… why would you ignore it?
> That nagging thought of “Something feels off about this client, but I REALLY need the money”…
> The pleas of a mother, desperately urging her child not to go out with a particular group of friends tonight…
I don’t know how many times these things need to happen before we realize that God is in fact with us and speaking to us – warning us, encouraging us, trying to save us…
But the problem is we haven’t attuned our ears to hear Him…
The problem is we shrug His promptings off as just feelings or random thoughts that cross our minds…
‘A just mi mind’, as Jamaicans would say.
It’s not your mind.
It is not just another feeling.
It is your Creator earnestly trying to communicate with you… and the fact that you’re here reading this is testament to that too.
> “How do I know for sure it’s Him?”
Have you ever been able to identify someone by just hearing their voice?
It’s no different with God.
If you’re able to identify someone by just their voice, all while not seeing them, it means you know that person just enough that more than one senses have become attuned to identifying them by characteristics your eyes can’t perceive.
In other words, though you may not be able to see them physically, your ears have become attuned to identify them by the unique sound they give off.
And if we’re to take it a step further, it’s the same reason why you can sometimes ‘hear’ someone by reading the words they write.
So then, if you want to identify when God is speaking, you first need to know how He sounds…
And to know how He sounds, you have to get to know Him (yes, much like you would get to know someone).
The way we do this is by:
- reading our Bibles (the Bible is God’s written Word after all),
- praying (practicing active communication with God),
- fasting (a time of putting aside the things we find pleasure in and replacing that time for quality time with God)…
- and putting ourselves in environments with other believers (hearing how God relates to others exposes you to more avenues to learn how He speaks… and also, faith comes by hearing [Romans 10:17]).
It’s time (it’s overdue actually) we attune our ears to hear more clearly from God so that we no longer question where He is.
Start by getting to know Him –
ask Him a question (ask Him what His favourite colour is and tell me 🤭),
invite Him in your space,
thank Him for what He’s done, and seek out like-minded people that you can grow in Christ around.
And don’t doubt that you’re able to hear God, because the promptings and nudges you experience are a testament that you can.
Your sister in faith,
Tiff FR.
